Advantages of Sea Freight FCL

Faster Transit Times
Since FCL containers are shipped directly from origin to destination without consolidation or deconsolidation, they typically move faster than LCL shipments.

Lower Risk of Damage or Contamination
With FCL, the cargo remains untouched from loading to unloading, avoiding multiple handlings, minimizing risks of loss and damage. This is especially beneficial for fragile, high-value, or sensitive goods.

More Cost-Effective for Large Shipments
When shipping large quantities of goods, FCL often improves cost efficiency by reducing cost per unit shipped compared to LCL, fully utilizing the container space.

Greater Security and Control
Since FCL cargo is sealed at the origin and opened only at the final destination, it offers better security against tampering, theft, or plundering, making it a preferred choice for high-value shipments.

When to Use Sea Freight FCL

Large-volume shipments

When your shipment is large enough to fill or nearly fill a container.

Cost-effective at scale

When the per-unit shipping cost is lower with a full container.

Reduced handling

When you want to reduce cargo handling, since once the container is closed, it’s rarely opened until it reaches its designated destination.

Time-sensitive shipments

When you have more lead time with the shipment, but still not enough to use LCL shipping.

Personalized packaging

When you need to transport your cargo in highly customized packaging or packing methods.

High-value or fragile goods

When you need to transport high-value or fragile cargo that requires minimal handling to reduce the risk of theft or damage.

Private or confidential cargo

When you need to maintain a high level of shipment confidentiality.

Single destination shipment

When all the cargo is going to the same place, and you want to avoid the cargo delays caused by shared unloading.

Step 1: Booking with a freight forwarder
Freight forwarders should provide options for the size, weight, and type of load being booked. Upon receipt of quotes, review the options, including costs, delivery times and incoterms. Understanding the incoterms will ensure shippers and consignees know exactly what they will be paying for and any additional fees they’re responsible for.

Step 2: Documentation
Bill of Lading or Sea Waybill. Once possession of the shipment has been turned over and the carrier has taken control of the goods, they should provide an Ocean Bill of Lading (OBOL). Acting as a receipt of sorts, the BOL is a transportation contract that confirms the party in control of the cargo and all critical shipment details.

Step 3: Export haulage
Export haulage–moving the load from the point of pickup to the freight forwarder’s warehouse–is the first physical step of the FCL journey.

Step 4: Export customs clearance
Once the container is loaded and sealed, the truck will take it to the port of origin, where the cargo undergoes customs clearance procedures. Customs officials will review all documentation and may examine the cargo to ensure adherence to export regulations and confirm the provided information.

Step 5. Transportation
The container will travel either by direct vessel, where there are minimal stops on the way to the final port, or transshipment service, which means there will be multiple stops along the way to the final port. Which type of vessel the container is loaded onto will be a determining factor in the total transit time of the trip.

Step 6. Import customs clearance
Upon arrival in the destination country, import customs clearance must be completed to ensure the cargo complies with local regulations.

Step 7. Import haulage
The final step is import haulage, transporting the freight from the final port of discharge to its final destination.

FAQ

Q: What is FCL in sea freight?

A: FCL (Full Container Load), or full container: the client's goods are transported in a filled and sealed container; LCL (Less than Container Load) or grouped shipment: the client' goods are not numerous enough to fill a container, the goods of several clients are put into one container.

Q: How does FCL work?

A: Full Container Load (FCL) is a term used in sea freight for shipments where an entire container is consigned to and paid for by a single shipper or consignee.

Q: How is FCL calculated?

A: The freight cost of the FCL container is a standard calculation consisting of the container size and route, along with the chassis fee, which is the cost to truck a container to or from a shipping terminal to the final destination.

Q: How to calculate FCL shipment?

A: Determine the Container Size.
Get Base Shipping Rates.
Account for Fuel Surcharges.
Add Terminal Handling Charges (THC)
Consider Additional Fees.
Include Insurance Costs.
Estimate Customs Duties and Taxes.
Add Inland Transportation Costs.

Q: Is FCL faster than LCL?

A: FCL shipments usually get to their destination faster than LCL because there are fewer processing steps along the way. According with experts, LCL shipments from China to the U.S. West Coast take about 28–35 days on average, while FCL shipments are typically faster since there's no consolidation delay.

Q: How to track an FCL shipment?

A: Visit the official website of FCL Logistics or the platform where you ship. The bill of lading (B/L) or reservation number is the unique identifier associated with your FCL shipment. Look for the "Track" or "Track Shipment" section and enter the tracking number provided associated with your shipment.
